The cost of permits required for remodels

I read in our local newspaper on Monday, 01-24-11, that the cost of remodeling permits in our area are going from $300 to $2,000 or more depending on what is being done. This amount is above and beyond the cost for the intended remodel project that is when it struck me, why pay for the cost of a permit for updating your kitchen when you do not need to. Instead of replacing your cabinets with new ones (this requires a permit) just reface them (this does NOT require a permit)so right off of the bat you have just saved yourself $300-$2000. Now think about what extras you could afford with the money you saved on the permit...upgraded faucet, microwave, pull out shelving, etc. hhmm...
